Rolo Kiln DCR: Experimental Wood Firing

Date

September 2025

Location

Driving Creek, Coromandel New Zealand

Wood firing

Rolo kiln, reduction, experimental firing.

Last week I participated in an experimental firing of the Rolo kiln at Driving Creek under the guidance of Aaron Scythe and Sergei Shatrov. We loaded this kiln with wet pots (raw firing) and then fought the nature of this fast fire salt kiln to slow it down and generate anagama kiln type effects. A final intense reduction using hardwood charcoal generated patches of deep purple and containing the temperature below Cone 10 retained the luscious variation in color created by blending locally dug and commercial clays. The results were spectacular and not one of those wet pots exploded. More photos to come as posts are are cleaned.
